Malaria alone accounts for 600,000 of that number, not to mention the fatalities & economic loss due to other mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue, Zica, and Japanese Encephalitis easily topping more than a million every year. According to a study by the Health Policy Research Unit, Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi – the total economic burden due to Malaria in India could be US$ 1940 Million, and this is a report from 2017. The Indian economy has been growing at a phenomenal rate of 7+% over the past 5 years, and this would translate into much higher costs today.
In India, vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis (JE), kala-azar, and lymphatic filariasis have a considerable impact, in terms of mortality and debility. Controlling mosquitoes throughout the ages has not been possible due to the multiple factors which affect the epidemiology of these vector-borne diseases, notably ecology, vector bionomics, and economic, sociocultural, and behavioural factors.
The fact that about 95% of the population in the country resides in malaria-endemic areas even as vector-borne diseases like Dengue & Zica considered to be much deadlier are on the rise. Mosquitoes are difficult to control due to their early evolution & ease of achieving resistance to insecticides. Of late – the Aedes Egypti mosquito (Which causes Dengue & Zica virus) has become extremely widespread, especially in the urban areas of the country. A carrier & a single mosquito which carries the virus pose a grave threat to all the people residing or working in the vicinity, with Zica virus being an extremely high threat to Pregnant Women due to the fact that it could lead to Mocrocephaly and other birth defects in the new-born.
